Vast amounts of information are available on the bovine tuberculosis (bTB) problem in the UK and elsewhere, ranging from scientific reports and peer-reviewed journal articles, to information compiled by conservation and animal welfare charities, to reams of Government data and reports. Sifting through this mountain of information requires not just time, but also the patience of a saint and the persistence of a bloodhound. Making sense of the more technical and scientific information is another challenge, especially for the layperson.
Badgergate avoids duplicating information that’s readily available elsewhere unless we’re using it to make a specific point. Instead, in our Bovine TB section, we compile and analyse existing data and policies on critical aspects of the Government’s new badger control policy, including the two pilot culls that are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2013. Amongst other things we look at the scientific, economic, ethical and practical aspects of the badger control policy, as well at the specific objectives and design of the pilot badger culls.
We also review the pros and cons of alternative options for bovine TB management such as badger and cattle vaccination against TB and other cattle-based TB control measures. Time permitting, we’ll also provide summaries of key technical and scientific publications of relevance to bovine TB management in the UK. Given the many players involved and the often technical nature of the subject, we’ve provided a Glossary of acronyms and abbreviations and one of technical terms.
Finally, a key objective of Badgergate is to provide a platform for the many rational and legitimate voices that are deeply opposed to the badger cull. We do this mainly through our Guest Articles, Badgerphernalia and through our Blog.
Further details of our content can be found easily through our main Navigation Menu and Side Bars as well as through the Site Map. Additional sources of information, including URL links to important documents and websites, are provided throughout. You will also find links to many key organisations and government agencies that are involved in some way on the bovine TB and badger cull issue, on our What You Can Do page.
As we are a small team with limited capacity, some of our content is still under development. So you may find that some of our internal links either do not work or that these take you to empty pages. Please bear with us as we continue to finalize and upload materials in the coming days. Given the imminent nature of the pilot culls, we did not want to delay launching our site. However, please do let us know if you spot anything that isn’t working as it should be. You can email us at [email protected].
